Lincoln Barbecue

Overview

Walking into Lincoln Barbecue feels like stepping into a neighborhood ritual rather than just another place to eat. I’ve been stopping by this spot at 68 W Lincoln Ave, Mt Vernon, NY 10552, United States on and off for years, usually after a long workday when the craving for real smoke and slow-cooked meat hits hard. The first thing you notice is the smell-deep, woody, and unmistakably authentic-which already tells you this diner takes barbecue seriously.

The menu keeps things refreshingly straightforward while still offering enough variety to make repeat visits exciting. Ribs, pulled pork, smoked chicken, and brisket show up with confidence, not fuss. On one visit, I watched the pitmaster pull a rack of ribs straight from the smoker, explaining to a curious customer how low-and-slow cooking allows collagen to break down naturally, making the meat tender without drowning it in sauce. That approach lines up with what the USDA often notes about proper smoking techniques: consistent low heat helps preserve flavor and texture while ensuring food safety when temperatures are properly monitored.

What really stands out is how the barbecue here balances tradition with practicality. The sauces are served on the side, letting the smoke speak first. I usually go for the pulled pork platter, which arrives piled high and clearly hand-shredded. The texture tells you it wasn’t rushed. According to food science research shared by organizations like the National Barbecue Association, pork shoulder typically needs 10-12 hours of smoking to reach peak tenderness. You can taste that patience in every bite.

This diner also works well for locals who want a quick, satisfying meal. Orders move fast, portions are generous, and the staff remembers faces. On one occasion, the cashier suggested a daily special based on what I’d ordered weeks earlier. That kind of familiarity builds trust and keeps regulars coming back. Reviews around Mt Vernon often mention the same thing: consistent food, friendly service, and prices that don’t make barbecue feel like a luxury.

Side dishes deserve their own moment here. The mac and cheese is baked, not scooped from a warmer, with a crust that cracks slightly under the fork. The collard greens lean savory rather than sweet, simmered long enough to soften without losing structure. Nutrition-wise, it’s comforting to know that smoked meats paired with vegetable sides can be part of a balanced meal when enjoyed in moderation, a point frequently emphasized by dietitians referenced by the CDC.

Location matters too. Being right on Lincoln Avenue makes this place easy to reach whether you’re driving through Westchester County or walking over from nearby blocks. It’s common to see families, solo diners, and even local workers grabbing takeout for lunch. The dining room isn’t flashy, but it’s clean and functional, which suits the food perfectly.

One thing worth noting is that hours can vary, especially on slower weekdays. I’ve learned to call ahead if I’m planning a late visit, which is a small limitation but understandable for an independently run barbecue joint. Fresh smoking takes planning, and once something sells out, it’s usually gone for the day.

Overall, this restaurant earns its reputation by focusing on what matters: quality meat, honest preparation, and a welcoming atmosphere. When people talk about barbecue in Mt Vernon, they’re usually thinking about the kind of place where smoke, time, and care come together naturally-and that’s exactly what happens here.

Nice undescript spot that has been around, and raved about, for many years. It was my first time stopping in. I ordered take out and sipped a glass of wine at the bar while waiting. I liked the crowd - women and men, slightly more mature, very friendly, in the restaurant/bar. TVs were tuned to portuguese television - I believe an evening ceremony in the streets of Lisbon. Bar/restaurant service was top notch, and the portuguese red wine was pleasant. Once home - reheating the takeout a very hours later, I was very pleased with the flavor combinations and portion size of the entrees ordered. Next time I want to dine in! I will certainly be back.

The food is awesome. The staff is super friendly. Only the back is warm but the back can still feel a lil cold during the winter weather. Everything else is great

Always a solid and affordable spot. Chicken, rice and beans, and fried potato slices have been consistent for years. Highly recommended!
